Behind Pathfinder Panama and Bacpakr Productions

Intro

Hello! Welcome to Blog #3! I'm back at my desk here in Panama City, ready to write this blog. It's been a cloudy, partly rainy afternoon. It looked like it was going to rain for most of the day and it only rained for about 20 minutes here. Word is less than 10 miles away and it has been raining most of the day.

Outside my comfort zone

Last week I wrote that the first time that I remember moving to a new school it pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I didn't decide to make the move to a new school however, it worked out well in the long run. I find that it is best when you decide to step outside of your comfort zone rather than have life push you outside it. That move was good practice for what was yet to come.

When I was in Junior High, at Curundu Jr High School (CJHS), I was interested in playing sports. I had played in leagues from the age of 7 or 8. The Panama Canal Commission had a recreation league for youth in the Canal Area. I don't know or remember the full extent of the sports that were offered. I participated in basketball, soccer, and baseball which led to softball.

While at CJHS I heard that there was going to be varsity basketball tryouts. I asked one of the PE coaches, Ms. Wruck, about playing as a 7th grader. She told me that you'd have to be good to play. I didn't go to the tryouts. I played intramural soccer as a 7th and 8th grader.

Devil's varsity basketball '89

Then when I was in 9th grade I decided to try out for varsity sports. Basketball was the first sport of the school year. I was really nervous, however I really wanted to play. The tryouts were at the high school. There were quite a few people there. I was nervous but, once we started I was fine. I was drafted to the Green Devils and ended up making the team. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. I remember thinking afterwards, I lost 2 years of playing sports due to fear. From that point on I tried out for all of the sports that I could that year and I made every team that I was drafted to.

There are other times in my life that I hesitated to attempt a task or goal. I think that I can't do something and I don't attempt it at that time. Then when I finally do attempt it it is much easier than I had expected. Afterwards I am left thinking what? That's it? Has that ever happened to you? How often? What have you learned from those experiences?

I'll write about another success or failure to try in the next blog. ;)

Conclusion

I think that I could have made a team as a 7th grader; however, I will never know because I didn't take the chance. Some opportunities only come around once.

Thanks again for making it to the end!
