Ok, I'm back at it. Back on the computer ready to type up another blog entry. That was the original plan. To type and post a new blog entry every Wednesday. As anyone can see from the posts I haven't done a good job of keeping up with that. Well, that was the past. Now on to the present. I'm here and ready to go!
I've been back in Panama now for 3 weeks after having spent some time in the U.S. Spring going into
summer is one of my favorite times to be in the U.S.
I love watching everything turn green. Trees get their leaves back, wildflowers sprouting, and nature comes alive again. There is something inside me that does as well, especially if I've been through winter.
As the school year comes to an end and with summer just around the corner. The camp industry is gearing up getting ready for summer. I didn't go to a traditional summer camp as a child. I went to soccer camps as a teenager. My first was at USC- Aiken. A small local day soccer camp. I was the only girl in the group. The following summer I went to another soccer day camp this time at Wake Forest University. This was much bigger coed day camp with over a hundred other soccer players. Then after that I went to UNC- Chapel Hill for an all girls overnight soccer camp. That was no joke! It kicked my butt!
After I graduated from college I had no idea what I wanted to do. I did know that after studying news I didn't want to work in news. One day a friend came over to our apartment. She was pretty excited because she was graduating in May and had secured a job for the summer. She happily shared that she was going to work for a girls summer camp in Maine as part of the video dept. I found it interesting. I had never thought about working for a summer camp. I didn't know that they had video depts.
I quickly applied to the camp. Soon afterward I had my interview. To my dismay they really didn't need anyone else in the video department, however they were looking for someone to run their athletic dept. Yikes! Run a whole dept...gulp. I have never even been to a traditional summer camp. I don't know how to run a program at a summer camp. They also needed folks to lead trips. Well, I thought maybe I could do that. I signed a contract to guide the trips and to work part time in the video dept.
I ended up guiding the off camp trips, working a tad bit in video then moving over to the athletic dept to coach the soccer program. I didn't agree to direct the athletic program because I didn't have the confidence to do so. I felt that since I had spent the last 2 plus years studying tv news I didn't have the necessary skills to run an athletic program. That someone with a recreation degree would be more qualified. Well. I was wrong! Once I got to camp I realized that I could do a better job than the knucklehead that they hired. He had the confidence to apply that made the difference.
Has that ever happened to you? Lack of confidence stops you from trying something only to find out that you can do it, and well. Life lessons! Share your experience in the comments.
